Winnipesaukee Sportsmen's Club Supports Brook Trout Project at Moultonborough Central School
Thanks to generous support from the Winnipesaukee Sportsmen's Club, the fifth grade at Moultonborough Central School has embarked upon the Brook Trout in the Classroom program. Through this program, sponsored by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, students care for hatchery-bred brook trout in the classroom, observe their development, learn about the brook trout's habitat and life cycle, and then release the trout fingerlings to a local stream in April or May. Funding from the Sportsmen's Club has enabled Moultonborough Central School to purchase an aquarium chiller - a

crucial piece of equipment that enables the students to keep the baby brook trout at a temperature that closely duplicates that of local streams at this time of year.

On March 7, four members of the Sportsmen's Club –Leon Barton, club president; Will Powers, club vice president; Barbara Creelman, secretary; and Betsy Graham – visited Maud Anderson's fifth grade classroom to meet with the students and see the brook trout program in action. Lively discussion ensued as the students shared what they've been learning and noticing as they care for the trout, and the visiting club members told the students about the many programs the Sportsmen's Club provides for area youth. Naturally, tales of fishing adventures were exchanged as well!

The Brook Trout in the Classroom program is part of a larger regional effort coordinated by Trout Unlimited and state Fish and Game departments to increase native brook trout populations and restore brook trout habitat. Eastern brook trout require cold, clean, highly oxygenated water. Because they are so sensitive to water quality and water temperature, they are especially vulnerable to pollution, acid rain, and other human impacts. As the Moultonborough fifth graders care for their young trout, they are learning what we all can do to protect trout habitat and help New Hampshire's state freshwater fish to thrive!
